Granite For More Than Your Kitchen

We’re thinking of putting in one of those built in gas grills in our backyard, but I have a question as to the counter top. This may be a crazy idea, buy has anyone ever tried to have a granite counter top on one of those things?
It seems like all I ever see is tile or a wood chopping-block sort of counter top on those built ins. But both of those would weather so quickly in our thin, dry air and snowy winters here in Colorado. I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t use granite-isn’t that an incredibly hard substance that stands up to weather by design? And you could go and buy some little remnant and have it cut, I would think. Some pattern that isn’t popular should be really quite affordable. Even if the color is ugly, who cares? Then all you would have to do is put in one of those drop in grills. And it would be so sanitary, too!
Maybe I’m sounding naïve and people are already putting these in-I just haven’t seen them yet.But since wood would split and grout would crack, well, this just seems like the best option to me!

I don’t know why it wouldn’t work. Give it a try. I think the idea about getting a remnant is great. You could probably get something for pretty cheap!

Yes, granite is extremely durable, although I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything about how it stands up under different weather conditions. I’m sure it would be fine. I know you can put hot pans on it without damaging it so that might make it useful to have outdoors.

Well it’s a natural substance, so I don’t know why you’d have any problems using it outdoors. That’s where it came from in the first place!

I’ve seen some set into stone counters that looked really nice. I don’t know exactly what the countertops were but it was probably granite or slate or something like that.

Yeah, it doesn’t sound like wood would hold up very well outdoors. If you’re going to use it a lot, I’d definitely go with something more durable.

What would you do with the wood part then? Are you just going to cover it with the granite or remove it? I guess I’d have to see it to really understand what you are talking about.

most of the ones I’ve seen that have built-in countertop space were just metal. I’ve seen some with tile too but granite seems like it would be a good choice.
