Individual vs. Group Policies

Many people get disability insurance through their employer as opposed to getting their own individual disability insurance policy. There are many reasons that an individual plan is better than a group plan.
First, many group plans can be cancelled or changed without any notice to you. With a group policy you may find yourself without coverage. Group policies cannot follow you if you move to a different employer. Group policies also require that you be completely disabled before they will pay benefits. Also, some policies will not cover you if you suffer a partial disability.
Buying an individual disability insurance policy gives you many benefits over group policies, including the ability for the policy to follow you to employers. Most policies do not change and cannot be cancelled as long as your premium is paid. Also, individual policies will allow you to obtain work in a different job while receiving payments for your disability in your current job. Disability insurance for the physician would allow a surgeon to still serve as a general practitioner while being paid for his surgical disability.
There are many disability insurance companies that are willing to give you free disability insurance quotes today. Take a look at your options and see if an individual policy is right for you.
