A Speech at School

Usually about once a semester, the school staff has someone come in and give some kind of inspirational speech to the student body. It might be MADD or a pregnancy prevention group; it seems to change all the time but the stories are the same; meant to scare us into behaving ourselves. So when they told us that this speech was going to be from someone from a Florida alcohol treatment center, we all figured we knew what the message would be. Were we wrong. The person that came in was someone who was currently seeking treatment at the Florida drug rehab center for drugs and alchohol: she was a grandmother! Seriously! Sweet, soft-spoken, this woman talked about her addictions and how Florida drug treatment centers saved her life and the life of her daughter whom she helped get addicted. She went on to talk about family addiction and how common it is to pass this along and how many families will hide and deny that there is a problem. Her daughter just gave birth to a premature baby and CPS took it away until she was a fit mother. How devastating would that be? It was one of the most powerful speeches we ever heard in school.
