The Importance of Backing Up

Take it from someone who has actually lost a lot of important information before in hard drive failure: It is really important to back up your data frequently.

That bears repeating. Your business’s success requires that you back up frequently.

There is nothing more upsetting than losing all of your business emails, or client information, or business financial records in a computer failure. Absolutely nothing that I can think of, short of bankruptcy or something equally catastrophic, has the power to be more devastating to your business.

So hopefully I’ve convinced you of how important it is to back up your data. I haven’t? Read the first two paragraphs again, then. I mean it — this is really important.

Once you believe me, you should start looking into data storage solutions for your business. There are a variety of options available. Some companies offer servers that you can simply upload your data to, while others also provide document management solutions such as software or automatic backups.

Whatever you choose, the important thing is that you are backing up, hopefully to a remote location. This is best because that way if something happens to your office — it gets vandalized or robbed, or a catastrophic event such as a flood or a fire takes everything out — this way you don’t lose your backups as well.

Got Dreamweaver Extension?

I always laugh when I watch one of those “Got Milk” commercials on television. Not really sure why, but I do nonetheless. Recently, I had picked up a new software program that was supposed to help me learn to code faster, and with fewer errors. I thought this might be worth looking into, so I dove head first into the task of learning all about it.

Shortly into my education, I discovered that there are additional add on applications that one can purchase which will reduce a lot of the repetitive coding chores, plus add a ton of more functionality to my program. After I had purchased my first dreamweaver extension, I was hooked. I knew I would never go back to hand coding web sites again.

In fact, I became so infatuated with them, I soon found myself day dreaming about buying more and more of them. One day I accidentally left the TV on while working, and saw one of those cute milk advertisements that had a talking cow or something. While I was chuckling at the humor of the ad, a phrase entered my consciousness.

“Got Dreamweaver Extension?” Even just rereading that made me LOL, What can I say. I must be a geek!

Cell Phone for Soldiers

With tax time coming up, it gives us an opportunity to review which charities we gave to and which are most deserving of our contributions for the coming year. Our favorite charity is Cell Phones for Soldiers. This organization collects cell phones to redistribute to soldiers who are serving overseas. The organization collects cell phone and cellular phone batteries to refurbish and redistribute to soldiers. If the cellular phones can’t be made new again then the organization disposes of the old cell phones. The organization swaps the cell phones for prepaid cell phone to give to soldiers so they have minutes available to call their family and loved ones at home.

The benefit of donating old cell phones, cellular phone chargers, cell phone earpieces and other accessories is you get credit towards your taxable contributions and a worthy organization gets the resources it needs to carry out an admirable mission. With long deployments and multiple months away from loved ones, a soldier appreciates the ability to communicate with those he or she left behind. Organization like Cell Phones for Soldiers spring up from grass root efforts to help others. We feel proud to donate and support the efforts of this admirable charity.

Photo Printing Options

The world of photo printing has exploded in recent years. It used to be that you could only successfully print on specially treated or bonded paper to achieve beautiful prints, and that you could very rarely find a printer to print a photo onto canvas for an exorbitant fee. Enter in the internet printers, and a whole new world of printing has been opened up. You can print your favorite photos on anything. There are sites that offer photo post it cubes, photo handbags, photo blankets, custom baby bedding, custom pillows, personalized throws, photo tapestries, personalized calendars, mousepads, mugs, and T shirts. You can create promotional items with flare, business cards with a wonderfully personal touch and professional printing, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. It is truly unbelievable. I imagine it won’t belong before you can fully integrate everything in your life with your favorite photos; just imagine, I could have a MacBook with a photo printed around the Apple symbol. Actually, that would be something I’m interested in! I think surrounding yourself with beautiful, crisp and poignant photographs is nothing to be ashamed of; to the contrary, I think ultimately it can be very fulfilling and appropriate.

Advantages for Business

There are a ton of internet service providers to choose from. I have been staying away from all the ones that aren’t wireless internet providers. With wireless Internet, there is really no need for you to have to be plugged into a wall these days. I mean a standard laptop battery lasts anywhere from 5 to 6 hours, and the extended batteries last anywhere from 8 to 9 hours. You pretty much can work a full day before needing to charge up. Now you can diversify your workday by working outside, or in a conference room, or somewhere near a window.

For us, having wireless routers has allowed us to continue our normal admin work while in the testing labs. We can record data, and send it off in real time. Not only that, but we have the ability to let our supervisors know there is a problem immediately. I can’t begin to imagine not having wireless now. Actually, I can’t really imagine working for any company that doesn’t have wireless Internet. It really allows a sort of freedom to the users by allowing them to roam around without losing their chat or video sessions. It is a huge advantage for any business.

Hotel vs. Coffee House

I’m pretty sure that the high speed internet service the hotels offer in Seattle are much better than some of the wireless internet access that is being offered in some of the local coffee shops. I’m not too thrilled about having to pay for Internet when I am staying at a hotel, but it is even more painful when I have to pay for Internet at a coffee house. Especially so when the coffee house has a slow connection. I’m a big advocate of being able to have a cup of coffee while reading the latest news from CNN. I also think that offering an atmosphere that is conducive to working, like having free Internet, is the best thing a coffee shop can do.

I’ve only been to about five coffee shops so far, and I’m staying in Seattle for at least another week. I’ll have to update my future coffee sipping experiences after I’ve sampled a couple more locations. It seems like there is at least one shop on every corner here, and so far the last three I’ve visited have had some nice furniture to lounge on while you are having that morning goodness. I’ll write again when I find out more.
