Working in Drug Rehab

substance

People who are interested in working as rehab counselors for those who have substance abuse problems don’t need to have an extensive educational background. However, they do need a little bit of schooling and they also need to have some basic skills that make them good at the job.

A few of the things that you need to be good at working in drug rehab centers include:

  • Certificate or Associates Degree in substance abuse counseling. This education makes it a lot easier to get a job in the field.
  • Understanding of substance abuse issues. Having experienced drug problems yourself or having seen a loved one deal with these issues makes you better able to understand the realities behind the job.
  • Understanding of local drug issues. Someone in Florida would want specific insight into Florida alcohol treatment and Florida drug treatment issues as opposed to simply a broad understanding of drug treatment.
  • Patience with people without being a pushover. There’s a fine line in drug treatment where you need to be really patient with your patients but you also need to be capable of setting boundaries and sticking to them.

These are the skills and requirements that serve as the bare minimum for what you should have to get started in work as a drug rehab staff member. Beyond that, it’s just all about gaining on-the-job experience!
