I run my own writing business, and I love it.  There are so many reasons why I wouldn’t give up freelancing for anything, but here are a few of the biggest reasons:

1. I can choose my own hours.  Usually, of course — if I have a deadline looming this doesn’t apply.  But I love being able to blow off work during the day and make it up in the evening if I need to, or work more or fewer hours as I wish.
2. My earning power is directly related to how much I work.  Many professional jobs don’t pay overtime anymore, so you can be forced to work a lot of hours without really earning any more.  Owning your own business offers you the financial freedom of deciding for yourself how much you want to earn.
3. I don’t have to spend time and gas money commuting to and from work.  This doesn’t apply if you buy a franchise for sale or start your own brick-and-mortar store, of course, but there are plenty of businesses you can operate out of your home.  With the cost of gas these days, it really pays off to work from home!

If you are thinking of starting an eBay business, for example, I highly recommend being self-employed.  I can’t imagine a better life!
