Couples on the Same Career Path

Do you want to marry someone who works in the same career field as you? Or would you prefer to marry someone who works in an entirely different industry? There are pros and cons to each option.

When you marry someone in the same career field as yourself, you marry someone who understands what you do. This gives you someone to talk to who really understands what you’re going through. It also gives you someone to compete against which can be either good or bad. You may find yourself always talking about work or you may find that you two can actually start working together happily.

When you marry someone who is in a different career field, you risk failing to understand what they do. However, you also have the chance to learn from them. My best friend’s husband went to cooking school. She can’t cook at all and has zero interest in culinary arts degrees but she’s having fun learning from him in the kitchen.

Either way can work. And either way can fail. It’s more important to choose a partner with similar interests and a common communication style than to choose a partner whose work you do (or don’t) understand.
